I have nothing but respect for my president, Baga Chipz, but UK Drag Race 2020 was a bit “make do and mend,” a touch slapdash. This season is an Uber Eats of thrills and spills, of horrors and fairy tales, of LOLs and sobs (especially after Ru vetoed off-the-peg high-street drag). I won’t bore you with some jingoistic patter about how amazing the U.K. is, but this series feels distinctly British, still a touch brutish, without the lacquered Hollywood veneer of American seasons. There’s a sense the queens are scrabbling whilst serving, self-deprecating whilst wisecracking. The stakes are higher for us when there are no pubs, no offices, no distractions, and we’re all high on the medical-grade competitiveness of the competition. Thank you to U.K. Drag Race for being the silver lining of our pandemic. Bing, bang, bong.
